NEW PROJECT: VECTOR KYIV - EMPOWER UKRAINIAN ART & CULTURE

WHO WE ARE

501c3 NON-PROFIT BROOKLYN NY:

VECTOR FOUNDATION

We believe passionately that the power of the Artist’s vision is a driving force in the evolution of attitudes, ideas, and culture; which must be enhanced to challenge and inspire the world.

This concept started with Vector Artists Journal, which publishes a collection of essays by contemporary artists, with each issue focusing on adifferent city, and the artists based in that city.

Since the frst issue in 2008, Vector has released 9 issues in cities around the world; New York, Berlin, Oslo, Toronto, and Munich. In this span, Vector has grown into an international brand of curated content, with an overwhelming interest from multiple institutions around the world.

VECTOR ARTIST JOURNAL

OUR MISSION

MOTIVATION:

ART AMIDST CONFLICT

Given the ongoing war, initiating a cultural project in Ukraine might appear paradoxical. We assert that there couldn’t be a more opportune moment.

Amidst the international focus and solidarity with Ukraine, this art initiative will serve as a powerful conduit for exposing Ukrainian artists to a global audience. There’s more than just a conventional war unfolding; cyber warfare and disinformation campaigns also plague the region. These acts are not just assaults on Ukrainian territory but are designed to erode its culture, history, and very identity. Art emerges as a potent counter-narrative to these attacks.

BEYOND BORDERS:

THE ROLE OF ART IN DEMOCRACY AND HUMAN PROGRESS

The conflict also represents a broader assault on democratic values and human progress. The trajectory of humanity for the next century could well be influenced by the outcome of this war.

Art, therefore, becomes a powerful weapon in promoting free thought, resilience, and collective identity. Moved by these considerations and a personal sense of duty, we

felt compelled to develop a VECTOR Artist Journal focusing on Ukraine.

COLLABORATION:

LOCAL INSIGHT, GLOBAL EXPOSURE

To accomplish this, we collaborated with Ukrainian curator Daria Prydybailo, with a foothold in both Kyiv and Berlin. She is the founder of “Art Matters Ukraine”.

Initially we conducted our groundwork remotely. Then at the end of June, Vector Founder/Director, Peter Gregorio embarked on a 5 week journey to Ukraine - starting in Berlin, meeting with Ukrainian artists in exile, then proceeding to Lviv, Ukraine for a week - meeting artists, gallerists, and a Ukrainian art publisher. Then finally to Kyiv for 3 weeks.

During this period, Gregorio did studio visits with artists who will participate in Vector Kyiv, visited museums, and met with gallerists. Their stories were recorded and amplified through images and videos, thus setting the stage for the project and generating initial awareness.
